Les Brebis de Saint Michel de l'Attalaye or BRESMA, the orphanage that was the focus of a rescue of more than 50 Haitian children after the January 12 earthquake, remains in crisis. Most of the children remaining are destined for France, while 12 have no pending adoptions. Conditions at BRESMA improved slightly after Iniciativa Comunitaria, a group of street medicine physicians from Puerto Rico, arrived on February 9th, 2010. The medical team examined dozens of children after having been alerted by officials at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center of the deteriorating conditions at BRESMA. Doctors found that medical records for the orphans initially were not forthcoming. Dehydration, intestinal parasites and scalp infections were also present among the children while basic medical supplies were unable to be found within the orphanage.
