For the past several years, SMI's International Street Medicine Symposia have been attended by individuals from over 80 countries around the world. Wishing to continue to foster and celebrate the expertise and diversity contributed by all of you to the street medicine movement, the Street Medicine Institute, with guidance from worldwide partners and board members, offers an international membership for citizens of countries other than the United States based on the published Cost of Living Index (COLI) data. We are implementing this adjustment in recognition of the importance of remaining an inclusive community where we can all learn, share ideas, and innovate together. 

If you are a person with lived experience of homelessness, we ask that you select the membership category that represents your recent highest level of professional achievements. The PWLE category is right for you if you have experienced homelessness in the past five years and you are not currently in a professional role.

International membership categories include three groups, organized by country and the COLI for that country: 

  • Physicians/administrators and other healthcare professionals who are citizens of Group A countries are offered a 40% discount on  SMI's standard membership. (See dues categories)
  • Physicians/administrators and other healthcare professionals who are citizens of Group B countries receive a 60% discount on SMI's standard membership. (See dues categories)
  • All citizens of Group C countries are free.  

We understand that COLI varies over time; if you believe your country is more appropriately placed in a different group, please email us at [email protected] so that your concerns can be considered. Free membership for persons with lived experience remains our standard regardless of where you live throughout the world.
